Today’s Reiki Master Healing is credited to Japanese minister Dr. Mikao Usui.
Reiki can be traced back to 3,000 B.C., but it was virtually lost until Usui re-discovered reiki master healing in the early 1800’s. The following is his story, as told to me by my own reiki master.
Usui’s journey began in 1822. At the end of a sermon he gave in Kyoto, Japan, a student asked him how Jesus performed healing miracles.
Usui realized that although he understood the Bible intellectually, he didn’t understand how the healings occurred.
Determined to find out, he travelled to Chicago and earned a degree in Theology, but was still no wiser as to the miracles of healing, so he returned to Japan.
Usui realized the Buddha also performed healings and controlled energy the way Jesus did, so he consulted with various Buddhist sects, asking if they could perform similar healings.
The Buddhists replied they focus on healing the spirit, rather than the body, so Usui asked the same question of a head monk at a Zen monastery. Their focus was also on healing the spirit, the monk told Usui.
Usui asked to be admitted to the monastery to study Buddhist scriptures. He was guided to learn Sanskrit so he could study original Tibetan Buddhist writings, which revealed the symbols, formulas and description of how Buddha healed.
This, however, did not give him the power to heal. Some key ingredient was still missing. He meditated with the monk and received guidance to go to Mount Kuri Yama, meditate and fast for 21 days, praying to receive enlightenment.
Usui climbed the mountain and gathered 21 stones to mark the passage of time. Every day he meditated and fasted, and threw one stone off the cliff.
Finally the 21st day arrived. Usui meditated and asked again for enlightenment about how to use his findings.
As he threw the last stone, a bright light appeared in the east, growing brighter as it grew closer. This frightened him, making him want to run, but he had been through too much for that.
He calmed himself and said, “If that light is for me, I accept the enlightenment.”
The light streamed across the sky and hit him squarely in his 3rd eye. Usui felt blissful and saw a rainbow of bubbles, then powerful white light, then golden Sanskrit letters.
The secret of how to contact Universal Life Force for reiki healing had been revealed to him.
Despite his 21 day fast, Usui felt energized and hurried down the mountain to tell the monk.
In his haste Usui stubbed his toe, cutting it. When he reached down to touch it he found his hands had a new kind of energy, reiki healing energy, and felt hot.
He healed his foot with a touch, then continued on.
Usui stopped at a home that serves travellers and ordered dinner. His server was a young girl with a bandaged wrapped around her jaw to soothe a toothache. He offered her a reiki healing, which the girl’s father accepted as meal payment.
Back in Kyoto, he asked his friend monk what he should do now, and was advised to meditate on it.
In his meditation Usui was directed to go to the beggar kingdom in Tokyo.
He got permission from the beggar king to live among the beggars and give reiki healing to the sick, which he did for the next seven years.
One day he met one of the first beggars he’d given reiki healing to. When he expressed surprise he was still a beggar, the beggar replied he’d done what Usui advised.
He'd gone to the temple and received a new name, went into society to deal with his karma, even got a job and married. But he found his new life was too difficult, so he resumed begging.
This upset Usui greatly, and he realized reiki healing for the body wasn’t enough, the spirit needed healing also. He immediately left the beggar kingdom and returned to the monastery.
In meditation he was given the following Five Spiritual Principals of Reiki:
Just for today:
I will not worry.
I will not be angry.
I will do my work honestly.
I will give thanks for my many blessings.
I will be kind to my neighbor and all living things.
These principals created significant changes in Usui's understanding of reiki healing.
He realized he’d been giving reiki master healing without asking the healee to take any responsibility for themselves, and that there hadn’t been any exchange of services.
Determined to fuse these spiritual concepts with the physical aspects of reiki, Usui lit a torch and walked the streets of Kyoto, searching for those pure of heart who wanted to become enlightened.
Thus began his teaching practice. He taught reiki master healing to 16 reiki teachers prior to his passing in 1893.
Dr. Chujiro Hayashi continued in his footsteps, dedicating his life to reiki and training two Japanese women. One remained in Japan, the other, Mrs.Hawayo Takata, spread the teachings to Canada and the US.
Now reiki master healing is available all over the world.
